GLOBAL GUARANTY ORCHESTRA – WELTMEISTER (CD by Ninth World Music)
JØRGEN TELLER – DELETE NATURE CONVERT TODAY (cd by Ninth World Music)
This is a label from Denmark I have never heard of before (not that I know
so many…) with some releases from different people who sort of seem to
belong to the same improv/jazz/punk scene. Global Guaranty Orchestra is
actually two guys: Henning Frimann and P.O. Jørgens who play a list of
instruments as long as your arm, so the term orchestra does apply. This
record has been made with a lot of zest and probably a lot of fun as well.
The twelve tracks on this disc take us through the whole range of the
listed instruments and apparently these guys play them effortlessly. Most
of the tracks have an upbeat tempo, constructed with a drum machine, and on
top of that melodies spin in and out of the texture of the pieces. After a
while though, things start to sound a bit the same, and it becomes
difficult to distinguish one piece from the next. I would guess that most
of the tracks are improvised and that does show in the end. Jørgen Teller
gave his CD the subtitle ‘solos for trigger guitar’. Now I am not sure
wether it’s the guitar being triggered by a sampler or the other way
around, but it does sound as if the guitar is being played by hand…. So
probably the sampler is being triggered here, adding fx and sometimes
pretty funny samples to the pieces (the title is actually a sample used in
track thirteen). The fifteen tracks are all pretty short, ranging from one
to six minutes and feature the guitar in a lot of different styles. From
noisy feedback drones to bluesy melodies; it’s all there. Most of the
pieces are ok, but the sound of the fx is sometimes a little too much for
me. It makes the pieces sound too much alike in all. And then the same
problem arises as with the Global Guaranty Orchestra CD: halfway through is
quite enough for me, although track fourteen is very funny in a conceptual
way……(MR)
